An annual Community Orchestra String Symposium is held at Allerton Park, a facility of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. The String Symposium is a three-day program of playing and learning designed to assist community orchestra string players improve their level of performance. It usually takes place on the first weekend of June. The emphasis is on adult players, although some younger players attend. All levels of proficiency are welcomed, from near-beginners to the highly accomplished. The goal of the Symposium is to strengthen self-confidence, independence, sightreading competence, and string techniques for all participating players.
The workshop is held at the
Allerton Conference Center, an elegant estate and country house on the banks of the Sangamon River in Monticello, near Champaign. Allerton Park is included in the Seven Wonders of Illinois and includes not only the University of Illinois' off campus meeting and retreat center, but also a unique botanical garden and forested areas.
